to the community Minister John Wilkie of Edgewood Church of Christ wanted to bring something special to the youth of Edgewood. Minister Wilkie
was looking for something that he could use to engage the youth. Sports is always a great icebreaker. With that in mind Minister Wilkie
made the decision to reach out to his good friend and Edgewood Church of Christ member, Former Harlem Globetrotter Choo Smith to bring his special
brand of basketball camp to the area. Choo Smith along with his camp director Lamont "Speedy" Pennick and three of his camp coaches, Kevin English
(Randallstown High Head Basketball Coach) , Angie Jones (Referee), Antoine "Scoop" Jordan (Owings Mills High Head JV Basketball Coach) and Omarr Smith
(Baltimore City College High Varsity Head Basketball Coach) came out and conducted a one day basketball clinic to the eager young athletes.
What a great turnout! Kids from all ages and skill levels came out to work on their game. The clinic started off with warm ups and then they
broke off into stations. They worked on ball handling, shooting and defensive drills. The coaches showed so much love and patience with
the kids. There were kids that never touched a basketball, but the coaches made sure they left the clinic mastering at least one skill.
Not only did they work on basketball skills but they got a chance to hear from Choo Smith himself and Minister Wilkie. Choo gave them an inspirational
message about his life. He spoke about how he fought through adversity and did not let anything get in his way of playing professional basketball.
Minister Wilkie reiterated the importance of believing in yourself and having a spiritual balance.
Minister Wilkie accomplished his goal of reaching the youth and introducing Edgewood Church of Christ to the community. Choo Smith and Minister Wilkie's
mission to engage the youth of Edgewood was a success. Because of the dedication of the Choo Smith coaches, Minister Wilkie's wife Juanda and
the Edgewood Church of Christ members, the kids and their families experienced a day they will never forget.
